Visualizing the Evolution of the US Economy

Quicktime movie: 1 MB

The macro economic data related to 100 years of the US economy were analysed using a statistical method called archetype analysis. While typical analysis techniques look at averages, and similar statistics, archetype analysis looks at the data with respect that to variables that represent extreme behavior, or archetypes. For instance, if we were studying consumers' buying habits, extreme behaviours would be the "shop-till-you-drop" type of person or the type who only buys by mail-order.

In this visualization, the US economy was summarised by plotting the data versus 3 archetypes: boom (in green), stagflation (in blue), and depression (in red).
